The spider in your blood

A discovery so unusual, it needed a story of its own.

Science that crawls under your skin

In your blood lives a protein shaped like a spider. Far from frightening, it’s a guardian of balance – catching harmful molecules in its many legs. Scientists at Hecklab mapped its strategies in extraordinary detail. Their challenge? How to share this discovery beyond dense publications. With help from Sensu, they spun the science into a short 3D film that seizes attention immediately – eerie, cinematic, and impossible to ignore.

A complex creature

For researchers, explaining the spider protein was like describing a web you can’t see. Its architecture is intricate, its behaviour versatile: sometimes each leg stretches out to catch a target, other times the whole body wraps around its prey. Without the right medium, the uniqueness of this protein risked being lost.

Spinning the story

Our solution was to lean into the spider metaphor fully. The result: a visually striking, almost horror-style animation that grips viewers while staying scientifically precise. By turning complexity into an experience, we helped Hecklab create a piece of science communication that is both memorable and meaningful.

A web of collaboration

The spider protein video is just one thread in the wider web of our long-standing partnership with Hecklab. Together, we continue to explore new ways of making science understandable and unforgettable. Discover more about this collaboration on the full case page.
